We can disconnect from pain or loss using endless activity, hard work, alcohol, or other means to anaesthetise ourselves.
Whilst it is quite usual to be numbed by unexpected loss, it is important to move through the sadness, anger, guilt, disorientation, or depression which are recognised phases of the grief cycle. So rather than numbing the pain, allow God to comfort you.

Yet such resilience is not automatic – it involves behaviours, thoughts, and actions that are learned and practised over time.
