Lent Through African Eyes

DAY 32 OF 45

Heartfelt Generosity Honours God

As Jesus prepared to give up His life, Mary honoured Him with a generous gift. One theme of Lent is giving alms. This event reminds us that we give and serve others out of gratitude for what Christ has already done for us.

From an Africa Study Bible application note:

The perfume that Mary poured on Jesus was very expensive. This caused some of the people watching to suggest that it should have been sold for a year’s wages and the money given to the poor. Mary had given lavishly, but some people saw it as a waste of money. They harshly rebuked her. However, gifts for great celebrations of things that pass away quickly should not be despised if they honour God.

The issue of giving has paralysed the church in many of our communities because some members give to fulfil requirements of a church programme, not from a generous heart. Other members give wholeheartedly, but their motives are misinterpreted, leaving them broken-hearted at the criticism. May we not be guilty of criticizing the offerings of others. Rather, let us celebrate generous giving. Each person should give as God leads them—not out of compulsion—for that is what pleases God.

Today:

How would you feel if you gave a gift that everyone criticised as extravagant? How would you feel if people thought a dear friend’s generous gift was too good for you?

Instead of judging the gifts of others, affirm them today. There are people serving in the church who give their time and their resources to honour God. Encourage them with a word, a gesture, or even a card.

About this Plan

Lent Through African Eyes

Africans throughout history have shaped Christian thought and contemplative practice. Starting Ash Wednesday, explore the Lenten themes of prayer, fasting, repentance, and alms-giving. Sojourn with Jesus’ disciples from his baptism to Holy Week. Abide with him in temptation. Hear the crowd shout—celebrating, then condemning. Watch Simon of Cyrene carry the cross. Witness the crucifixion with Mary. Join a biblical pilgrimage to prepare your heart for Jesus’ passion and resurrection.
