Lent Through African Eyes

DAY 31 OF 45

Choosing Humility

At the end of Jesus’ ministry, he sets his face toward Jerusalem, where he will be crucified. Our devotional now follows Jesus in the week leading up to his death. The crowds that shout praises to the Davidic king will soon shout “Crucify him!” and mock the “King of the Jews”.

From an Africa Study Bible application note:

During biblical times, donkeys were a symbol of peace, industry, and sometimes honour. Even though donkeys were considered humble animals, a colt that had not been ridden was ideal for royal use. On the other hand, horses were regarded as a sign of war, power, and the strength of a military force.

Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey, rather than a horse, to help indicate what kind of king he was going to be. He was a humble king who came to serve rather than a mighty warrior king who would rule with military power. Jesus rode a donkey colt that had not yet been ridden to show that he was a different kind of king.

In today’s world, for a king or president to choose a donkey instead of a horse could be compared to choosing an open truck over a rare luxury car. If we are to follow the example of Jesus, we should make deliberate choices that show others our commitment to humble leadership that serves our followers.

Today:

Jesus used His leadership position to serve others. List some of the skills and passions that make you who you are and the positions that God has given you. Thank God for His gifts. Ask Him for insight on how you can serve and bless others with these skills, even this week.

About this Plan

Lent Through African Eyes

Africans throughout history have shaped Christian thought and contemplative practice. Starting Ash Wednesday, explore the Lenten themes of prayer, fasting, repentance, and alms-giving. Sojourn with Jesus’ disciples from his baptism to Holy Week. Abide with him in temptation. Hear the crowd shout—celebrating, then condemning. Watch Simon of Cyrene carry the cross. Witness the crucifixion with Mary. Join a biblical pilgrimage to prepare your heart for Jesus’ passion and resurrection.
