The Daily Dose: 30 Days to a Healthy Soul

DAY 19 OF 30

Loving God’s Word

Psalms 119:97 "Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day."

How deeply do you value God’s Word? Do you tend to downplay it in your day-to-day life? Some people minimize the importance of the written Word of God. They claim Jesus is the living Word and worth pursuing, but minimize doing it through His word. Some people claim they can get to know God just as well as they climb a mountain or stroll through the woods. While I don't minimize the rest and focus humans can gain from the outdoors, we've been given God's written word to feed on daily and help us grow.

The truth is that many Christians miss the point of being in God's word. We can get so caught up in the task of reading that we miss the invitation that comes along with it. The reason the Psalmist wrote "Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day" is that he understood the communion with God that comes from spending time in God's word. It's about abiding. It's about intimacy and relationship. No wonder Jeremiah wrote these words in Jeremiah 15:16 “Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart. . . .”

I love God’s Word. I long to meditate on it even more and recognize that I need it deeply in my life. It is a lifeline for me when I’m hurting and an anchor for me when my world is shifting. And while God’s Word is not an end in and of itself, it is the best way to get to know the Father and the best way to grow stronger in faith. It is indeed food to be eaten daily.

How much time are you spending eating God’s Word each day? Do you connect with God when you open His word, or are you too rushed to enjoy it?

Questions:

What’s your relationship with the Word of God? Do you spend time reading it? How does it point you to Jesus, the living Word of God?
