GROWTH: TIME FOR YOU TO CHANGE YOUR SPIRITUAL CLOTHES

"That's just how I am" is a phrase we use when we don't want to change. That's how husbands excuse their tempers or wives their ancient grudges. That's how students excuse their mediocre grades or employees their rudeness to customers. It's also how Christians excuse their self-chosen immaturity.

Here's a paradox: God accepts you just as you are, warts and all. But he absolutely will not settle for your staying just as you are. As the gospel message of his unconditional love sinks in, he calls you to change yourself to be more like him, using his Word and Spirit and power.

The Bible's words: "You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness" (Ephesians 4:22-24).

Here's what to take off: a spirit of whining, envy, self-pity, and lying. Here's what to put on: a spirit of praise, gratitude, humility, and service.

If you're not sure where to start on your own life, just ask the people you live with. They will know right away where your changes need to begin.
