The Bible Course Muestra
Resurrection and Ascension – the victory of Jesus
Reflect
Have you ever had a day where everything changed? Life has many ordinary days, but some stand out. Some involve decisions or events that alter the course of your life. Wedding days, job interviews – once these days and moments happen, everything changes.
The Bible is shaped like an hourglass. It all funnels down to this narrow point as the Messiah dies and rises in Jerusalem. It all centers on this weekend that changed the world. This is the moment where everything changes.
What do the words ‘he is not here; he has risen’ mean for us today?
Luke records women arriving to tend to the body with spices, as was the custom. The least they could do was give Jesus a dignified burial. Jesus really did die. You only turn up to a grave with spices when you know there’s a dead body there. There they’re met by the two men who ask, ‘Why do you look for the living among the dead?’ (verse 6).
For the two men, the women at the tomb no longer made sense. There was no dead man here!
When Jesus rose again, he lifted our humanity to new heights. He was the same person yet totally metamorphosed. This is a physical resurrection. This is a new creation.
What do we learn from the experience of the disciples on the road to Emmaus?
The two walking away from Jerusalem were walking away from hope. They really had let themselves believe that Jesus was the one to free them from Rome (verse 21). They’d believed in a story, but that story was not the one God had written. Jesus as a stranger on the road re-interprets everything to hinge on him (verse 27). God was setting people free, not from Rome, but from themselves – from their sin!
Only when we find ourselves in Jesus’ story can hearts begin to burn and spirits soar. Meeting the risen Jesus meant for the disciples on the road and it means for us too that if God’s word did not fail then it won’t fail now! Nothing can derail the hope God has for you!
Because the resurrection of Jesus really happened - life can no longer be a hopeless end but an endless hope!
Respond
Followers of Jesus are people of hope. How could we extend that hope to a hurting and disappointed world today?
