Love God Greatly: Beatitudes

DÍA 9 DE 41

Land was a big deal for Israel: it meant security and prosperity, it was one of God's main promises to His people, and it was especially meaningful for generations of wanderers and exiles. When Jesus references this verse in the Sermon on the Mount, He is taking a specific promise to Israel and broadening it to include all of his followers. Jesus shifts the focus from a specific piece of land to all of the earth. Our hope is not found in possessions or property on this earth, but in the promise that God will redeem and renew His fallen creation.

The peace that God promises us is not merely the absence of conflict, but abundant flourishing in total safety. He does not promise us that we will find this peace here and now—in fact, He tells us to expect suffering and difficulty as believers on earth. Where we are tempted to create our own security by hoarding power or fighting our own battles, God reminds us that the meek will inherit the earth. Those who find their security in Him and not in any earthly source will be rewarded.

God, thank You for Your promises of peace and security! Help me to keep that eternal future in mind when I face difficulties on earth, instead of resorting to my own resources or strength.

Love God Greatly: Beatitudes

The Beatitudes offer great insight into how to live the Christian life. They offer comfort for the oppressed, wisdom for the innocent, and hope for the weary. The Beatitudes continue to offer comfort, wisdom and hope to followers of Christ. We can glean truth from the words Jesus spoke 2,000 years ago as we seek to understand how to live our lives in light of the coming Kingdom of God.
