John 9:1–41

Jesus Heals the Man Born Blind

John constructs his Gospel around seven signs: water to wine, two healings, feeding the five thousand, walking on water, healing the blind man, and raising Lazarus. (And then there is the surprise eighth sign in Jesus’ resurrection that marks the beginning of a new creation.) The sixth sign of the healing of the man born blind takes up an entire chapter, and the point of the sign is made explicit at the end of the chapter. Look at the last verse and learn this: There is an innocence in admitting that we are too blind to pass judgment on others; but when we claim to have 20/20 vision in judging the sins of others, our own sin remains. We should admit our own blindness and let Jesus be both healer and judge.
