Lamentations 3

3
God’s Love Endures
1I am the man who has seen affliction
by the rod of His wrath. # Job 19:21; Ps 88:7
2He has driven and brought me
into darkness without any light. # Job 30:26; Isa 59:9
3Surely against me has He turned His hand
continually, the whole day long.
4My flesh and my skin He has made waste away;
He has broken my bones; # Ps 51:8; Isa 38:13
5He has besieged and enveloped me
with gall and travail. # Jer 23:15; La 3:19
6He has set me in dark places,
like the dead of long ago. # Ps 88:5–6; 143:3
7He has hedged me in so that I cannot get out; # Job 3:23; 19:8
He has made my chain heavy.
8Even when I cry for help,
He shuts out my prayer. # Job 30:20; Ps 22:2
9He has blocked my ways with hewn stone;
He has made my paths crooked. # Isa 63:17
10He is to me a bear lying in wait,
a lion in hiding.
11He has turned aside my ways and torn me in pieces; # Job 16:12–13; Hos 6:1
He has made me desolate.
12He has bent His bow
and set me as a target for the arrow. # Job 7:20; Ps 38:2
13He has caused the arrows of His quiver
to pierce my inward parts. # Job 6:4
14I have become the derision of all my people, # Jer 20:7
their mocking song all the day. # La 3:63
15He has filled me with bitterness,
He has sated me with wormwood. # Jer 9:15
16He has made my teeth grind on gravel, # Pr 20:17
and covered me with ashes. # Jer 6:26
17My soul is bereft of peace; # Isa 59:11
I have forgotten prosperity.
18So I say, “My strength and my hope
from the Lord have perished.” # Job 17:15; Eze 37:11
19Remember my affliction and my wandering,
the wormwood and the gall. # La 3:5, 15
20Surely my soul remembers
and is humbled within me. # Ps 42:5–6, 11
21But this I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope: # Ps 130:7
22It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed; # Mal 3:6
His compassions do not fail. # Ps 78:38
23They are new every morning; # Zep 3:5
great is Your faithfulness. # Ps 36:5
24“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, # Ps 16:5; 73:26
“therefore I will hope in Him.”
25The Lord is good to those who wait for Him,
to the soul who seeks Him. # Isa 25:9; 30:18
26It is good that a man should wait quietly # Ps 37:7; 130:5
for the salvation of the Lord.
27It is good for a man to bear the yoke
in his youth. # Ecc 12:1
28Let him sit alone in silence # Jer 15:17; La 2:10
when it is laid on him;
29let him put his mouth in the dust—
there may yet be hope.
30Let him give his cheek to the one who strikes, # Job 16:10; Isa 50:6
and let him be filled with insults.
31For the Lord
will not cast off forever. # Ps 77:7; 94:14
32But though He causes grief, yet He will have compassion # Ps 78:38; Hos 11:8
according to the abundance of His mercies.
33For He does not afflict from His heart, # Eze 33:11
nor grieve the sons of men.
34To crush underfoot
all the prisoners of the earth,
35to turn aside the justice due a man
in the presence of the Most High,
36to subvert a man in his cause,
the Lord does not approve. # Hab 1:13
37Who is he who speaks and it comes to pass,
unless the Lord has commanded it? # Ps 33:9–11
38Is it not from the mouth of the Most High
that good and bad proceed? # Job 2:10; Isa 45:7
39Why should a living man complain,
a man for the punishment of his sins? # Mic 7:9
40Let us search and try our ways, # Ps 119:59; 139:23–24
and return to the Lord!
41Let us lift up our hearts and hands # Ps 25:1; 28:2
to God in heaven:
42We have transgressed and rebelled; # Ne 9:26
You have not pardoned. # 2Ki 24:4
43You have covered Yourself with anger and pursued us;
You have killed and not pitied. # La 2:17, 21
44You have covered Yourself with a cloud, # Ps 97:2
so that no prayer should pass through. # La 3:8
45You have made us filthy refuse # 1Co 4:13
in the midst of the peoples.
46All our enemies have opened their mouths
against us. # Ps 22:6–8; La 2:16
47Panic and snare have come upon us,
desolation and destruction. # Isa 24:17–18; 51:19
48My eyes flow with rivers of tears # Ps 119:136; La 2:11
for the destruction of the daughter of my people.
49My eyes flow and do not cease, # Jer 14:17
without respite,
50until the Lord from heaven
looks down and sees. # Isa 63:15; La 5:1
51My eyes bring suffering to my soul
at the fate of all the daughters of my city.
52My enemies chased me like a bird,
without cause. # Ps 35:7, 19
53They cut off my life in the pit # Jer 38:6, 9
and cast stones on me.
54Waters flowed over my head;
I said, “I am cut off!” # Eze 37:11; Jon 2:3–5
55I called on Your name, O  Lord,
from the lowest pit.
56You have heard my plea:
“Do not close Your ear to my cry for help!” # Job 34:28; Ps 55:1
57You drew near on the day I called on You, # Ps 145:18
and You said, “Do not fear!” # Isa 41:10
58O Lord, You have pleaded the case for my soul; # Jer 51:36
You have redeemed my life.
59Lord, You have seen the wrong done to me;
judge my case. # Ps 26:1; 35:23
60You have seen all their vengeance,
all their schemes against me. # Jer 11:19–20
61You have heard their reproach, O  Lord, # Ps 74:18; La 5:1
all their schemes against me,
62the lips of my enemies and # Ps 59:7; Eze 36:3
their devices against me all the day.
63Behold their sitting down and their rising up; # Ps 139:2
I am their mocking song. # La 3:14
64Render to them a recompense, O  Lord,
according to the work of their hands. # Ps 28:4
65Give them hardness of heart; # Dt 2:30; Isa 6:10
may Your curse be upon them!
66In Your anger pursue and destroy them
from under Your heavens, O  Lord! # Dt 25:19
