Eliphaz Speaks: Job’s Wickedness Is Great
1Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:
2“Can a man be profitable to God,
as he who is wise may be profitable to himself? # Lk 17:10
3Is it any pleasure to the Almighty that you are righteous?
Or is it gain to Him that you make your ways blameless?
4“Is it because of your fear of Him that He corrects you,
and enters into judgment with you? # Job 14:3; Ps 143:2
5Is not your wickedness great,
and your iniquity infinite?
6For you have taken a pledge from your brother for nothing, # Ex 22:26; Eze 18:16
and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7You have not given water to the weary to drink,
and you have withheld bread from the hungry. # Job 31:17; Isa 58:7; Mt 25:42
8But as for the mighty man, he possessed the earth,
and the honorable man lived in it. # Isa 9:15
9You have sent widows away empty, # Job 24:3, 21
and the strength of the fatherless was crushed.
10Therefore snares are all around you, # Job 18:8–10
and sudden fear troubles you,
11or darkness, so that you cannot see;
and an abundance of waters covers you. # Ps 69:1–2; La 3:54
12“Is not God in the height of heaven?
And see the height of the stars, how high they are! # Job 11:8
13And you say, ‘What does God know?
Can He judge through the dark cloud? # Ps 10:11; Eze 8:12
14Thick clouds are His covering, so He cannot see; # Ps 139:11–12
and He walks above the circle of heaven.’
15Will you keep to the old way,
that wicked men have trod?
16They were cut down before their time; # Job 15:32
their foundations were swept away by a flood.
17They said to God, ‘Depart from us,’ # Job 21:14–15
and, ‘What can the Almighty do to us?’ # Ps 4:6
18Yet He filled their houses with good things; # Job 12:6
but the counsel of the wicked is far from me. # Job 21:16
19“The righteous see it and are glad, # Ps 58:10
and the innocent laugh them to scorn: # Ps 52:6
20‘Surely our adversaries are cut down,
and the fire consumes their remnant.’ # Job 1:16
21“Now acquaint yourself with Him and be at peace;
thereby good will come to you.
22Receive, I pray, the teaching from His mouth, # Job 23:12
and lay up His words in your heart. # Ps 119:11
23If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up; # Zec 1:3
you will put away iniquity far from your tents. # Job 11:13–14
24Then you will lay up gold as dust,
and the gold of Ophir # 1Ki 9:28 as the stones of the brooks.
25Yes, the Almighty will be your gold
and your precious silver; # Isa 33:6
26for then you will delight yourself in the Almighty, # Job 27:10; Isa 58:14
and will lift up your face unto God.
27You will make your prayer to Him, and He will hear you, # Job 33:26; Isa 58:9
and you will pay your vows.
28You will also declare a matter, and it will be established unto you;
and the light will shine upon your ways. # Ps 112:4; Pr 4:18
29When men are cast down, and you say, ‘There is a time of exaltation!’
then He will save the humble person. # Jas 4:6; 1Pe 5:5
30He will even deliver one who is not innocent;
he will be delivered by the purity of your hands.”
