Unhooked: Holy in a Hookup World

DAY 15 OF 40

Week 3: Find Security

It’s week 3 of Unhooked! In week 2, you acknowledged your infinite value—which frees you to see that your security is in God. Intimate relationships involve vulnerability, which can be intimidating until you trust and believe that you’re safe and protected in God’s hands. Spend this week reflecting on the safety of His hands—you’re in them!

Day 15: Fear

Read

And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. –Philippians 1:6

Connect

While Gideon threshed wheat at the bottom of a winepress, God appeared to him.

“Mighty hero, the LORD is with you!” God said in Judges 6:12.

Because of his circumstances, Gideon begged to differ: the Midianites were so cruel to the Israelites that the Israelites had to hide from them.

“Sir,” he said, “if the LORD is with us, why has all this happened to us?”

God responded: “Go with the strength you have, and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I am sending you!” –Judges 6:14

Gideon was skeptical—he was governed by fear.

“How can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest!”

God promised: “I will be with you.”

But Gideon wasn’t so sure.

This is a theme throughout the rest of Gideon’s story. Over and over, God told Gideon what He was going to do, but Gideon didn’t trust that He would do it.

First, Gideon didn’t even believe that God was really God, so He proved it.

Then, God called Gideon a mighty hero. Gideon disagreed—and then he became one.

God said “I’ll be with you,” and Gideon doubted. Then, with God’s help and just as He had promised, Gideon defeated the Midianites with an army of only 300.

Gideon didn’t have to be afraid—because God came through for him every time, faithfully and without fail.

And He does that for you, too.

He chooses you. He invites you to help fulfill His will. He says you can do things you don’t think you can—such as waiting longer to meet a spouse, enduring the pain of a necessary breakup, or even thriving in your season of singleness.

You don’t have to be afraid. He won’t ask you to do something without also giving you the grace to do it.

Be assured that when you do whatever He asks of you, He will be with you.

Pray

Like Gideon, I sometimes struggle to trust that I can do what You say I can do, Lord. But over and over, You have made me able. Thank You, Father, for faithfully following through.

Reflect

Has God ever asked you to do something you were afraid to do? In what ways did He come through for you? Do you remember a time when you called on God, and He answered your prayer? Write about it.

About this Plan

Unhooked: Holy in a Hookup World

Take 40 days to look more deeply at the parts of your heart that need to be healed—so you can break the cycle of a broken heart and thrive in your singleness. While intimate relationships are designed to remind you of God’s love for you, living them out in a fallen world often results in wounds. This plan will help you move closer to Christ, in your pursuit of hope and healing.
