THE CALL TO SERVE
Jesus teaches a powerful lesson about humility and servanthood that goes against everything the world tells us. Society often defines greatness as having power, status, or being at the top. But Jesus flips that idea upside down. Instead of aiming to be first, He tells us that true greatness comes from being willing to be last. Following this kind of thinking isn’t easy—it’s the opposite of what we’re used to hearing.
Jesus also shows that the greatest people are those who serve others. Serving means putting someone else’s needs ahead of your own and choosing to be humble, even when it’s uncomfortable or inconvenient. Humility isn’t just a superior quality—it’s essential for anyone who wants to follow Jesus. Walking in His footsteps means letting go of pride and embracing the heart of a servant.
When I was younger, I learned an uncomplicated way to remember what matters most: JOY stands for Jesus first, Yourself last, and Others in between. Living this way may not always be easy, but it’s the kind of life that truly reflects the heart of Jesus.
Think about your own life. Are there areas where you’re chasing status or trying to be in control? Ask God to help you let go of pride and embrace real greatness through serving. Then look around—where can you make a difference today? It’s helping a classmate, listening to a friend, or simply being kind when it’s least expected. Every small act of service is an opportunity to live like Jesus.
