DEFINE SERVICE
Have you ever seen a totem pole in cartoons or online? You know, those tall wooden carvings stacked with figures? People today often use the phrase “low man on the totem pole” to describe someone unimportant. But here’s the twist—in Native American culture, the figure at the bottom is the most honored. It is the foundation, holding everything else up.
That’s the opposite of what we see in the world around us. Everyone’s aiming for the top—more likes on social media, the best clothes, the coolest car, the highest grades, the biggest reputation. Everyone wants to be number one. But Jesus says something radical: “Not so with you.”
In Matthew 20:25-28, Jesus tells His followers,
“You know that rulers in the world boss people around, but if you want to be great, you must be a servant. Whoever wants to be first must be a slave—just like I didn’t come to be served, but to serve and give my life for others.”
Think about it—being great in God’s eyes isn’t about fame or attention. It’s about humility. Philippians 2:3-4 says, “In humility, value others above yourselves.” When you serve, you’re following Jesus’ example, putting others first.
Here’s a truth to hold onto: even if no one notices your hard work, God does. Do you trust that He sees when you help a friend or clean up without being asked? If you want real success, start by serving. True greatness means supporting others with kindness and humility.
You don’t have to be at the top to make a difference—real impact comes from the bottom, lifting others up. So, do you want to be great? Start by being a servant.
