The “Motivational” Gifts

We’ll spend the next few days looking at various spiritual gifts listed in the Bible and briefly describing each one. Take note of any that strike you!

Our first list is often called “The Motivational Gifts” because the gift typically provides an underlying drive or “motivation” that spurs on our lives, affects our decision-making, and prompts how we engage with and treat others.

As our passage today suggests, these gifts come by “the grace given to each of us” and are meant to be shared. Generally, most people find that they have at least one of these gifts.

Prophecy: The gifting to determine what the Holy Spirit is saying and sharing it with others for edification, encouragement, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3). Men gifted this way are spiritually sensitive and have the boldness to share.

Service: The gifting to do what must be done behind the scenes to support and bless others. Men gifted this way usually shun the spotlight and are happy to do what needs to be done under the radar.

Teaching: The gifting to make God’s Word understandable and applicable for the listener. Men gifted this way have a way with words and the ability to make the text of Scripture engaging.

Encouragement: The gifting to speak hope, support, and strength into another’s life. Men gifted this way are typically optimistic and see the best in others.

Giving: The gifting to generate money and give it away to worthy causes. Men gifted this way are usually entrepreneurial and generous by nature.

Leading: The gifting to inspire others to follow in the same direction. Men gifted this way tend to find their way into leadership roles no matter how big or small the role is.

Mercy: The gifting to show empathy and compassion to others. Men gifted this way are sensitive and good at giving care verbally and practically.

These gifts bring glory to God and bless the members of the Church by pointing us to Jesus and strengthening our faith. Men gifted in these areas can use these gifts to edify and support others around them, pleasing the Lord as they do.

Prayer: Father, thank You for these gifts that You have given to bless Your Church. Help me see if I fit into this list somewhere, and show me how to use this gifting to glorify You and bless Your people. Amen.
