Advent Series: Who Is Jesus? (Isaiah 9:6)

DAY 4 OF 4

"For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace"

Isaiah 9:6

Wrapping up our four days together we come to Prince of Peace.

What comfort is found in that title alone!

But here’s the thing - Christ’s peace does not mean the absence of chaos around us.

We live in a fallen world. There is war. Illness. Disaster.

Even in our own inner world, there can be turmoil.

In John 14:27, Jesus promises, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Worldly peace is often the absence of conflict, but Jesus’ peace is the assurance of God’s presence with us, even in the midst of storms. It’s the deep, abiding peace that comes when we know that no matter what we face, we are held by the Prince of Peace Himself.

We can have confidence in the completed work of the cross to bring us salvation, victory, and ultimately an eternity with our Saviour himself.

Jesus brings peace in three profound ways. First, He restores our peace with God. Through His sacrifice on the cross, He reconciled us to God, bridging the gap our sin created.

Second, Jesus offers us inner peace. Even when life feels chaotic, His peace guards and guides us, protecting us from the anxiety and fear that threaten to consume us.

Finally, Jesus empowers us to bring peace to others. He calls us to put on the shoes of the gospel of peace - so as we walk in His peace, we become ambassadors of His kingdom.

Our peace comes from the truth that we are resurrected with Christ in new life. And that the King of Glory holds all of our days in His hand.

This is the peace that surpasses understanding. Because it isn’t based on our circumstances. It’s based on the person of Jesus Christ!

Reflection Questions:

  1. Do you live in this gift of Peace? Why or why not?
  2. How can you bring Christ’s peace to those around you?
  3. What would it mean for you if you could learn to rest in His peace during tough times?
