Advent Series: Who Is Jesus? (Isaiah 9:6)

DAY 2 OF 4

"For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace"

Isaiah 9:6

Jesus is The Mighty God.

In Hebrew, this is El Gibbor - which has a military context to it. Translated, El Gibbor is:

  • The God of Strength
  • The God of Power
  • God our Hero
  • God our Warrior

Whatever situation or circumstance you are facing - you have The Mighty God on your side - The Mighty God who has power over nature, disease, demons, and even sin and death.

The Hero that can part seas and close lion's mouths.

The Warrior that promises to fight for us, in whom we have the victory.

The God who never grows weary or needs to rest. But instead, in our weakness, he gives us His strength.

Paul assures us of Christ’s power at work in our lives: “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31). Because Jesus is the Mighty God, nothing we face is beyond His strength. He is greater than our struggles, our fears, and our anxieties.

This is the God we serve. This is Immanuel God with us. This is who Jesus is.

Our issue lies not in the fact we have a limited God. Our issues lay in the fact we tend to lean on our limited abilities rather than turn our situations over to the Mighty God in full faith and trust.

What awe and wonder that we have Christ who has come as our great defender! Not that we have earned it, but that he freely gives it to those we believe!

Reflection Questions:

  1. Do you have a situation that you are trying to solve yourself?
  2. What does it look like in your life that Jesus is our Mighty God?
  3. Do you walk out the joy and thanksgiving that comes with this revelation?
