Freedom through Him
How the old and new covenants fit together in the Bible is complex and beyond what we can investigate here. But as you examine their relationship, notice 2 Corinthians 3 equates the new covenant with freedom because of the Spirit of the Lord.
The Holy Spirit is key to what helps make the new covenant more glorious than even what came before it (3:11). What God established with His people through Moses can be viewed as ‘the ministry that brought death’ (3:7) because it spotlit the tragic consequences of our problem with sin.
Still glorious in how it revealed God’s holiness and mercy, the old covenant has been ‘surpassed’ in glory through ‘the ministry that brings righteousness’ (3:9). This ministry of Jesus Christ in grace is powered by the Spirit that is one with God the Father and Son (‘the Lord is the Spirit’, 3:17). Rejoice that the Holy Spirit destroys sin’s grip on us and releases us into a liberated life of being transformed into Jesus’ image (3:18).
