Being Bold

DAY 4 OF 7

When we think we can't

This interaction between Moses and God has always fascinated me. It follows a familiar pattern in scripture: Moses objects to God’s call on his life based on his skills (or lack thereof), and God promises His presence. Yet Moses persists and asks God to send someone else.

Guess what happens? God does, at least partially. He decides Moses’ brother Aaron will do the speeches. It’s impossible to know what Moses’ true motivation was. Outwardly, he felt underdeveloped in public speaking, and believed he was disqualified for that reason. I wonder whether there was more going on. He had just been asked to lead a nation out from under oppressive rulers – no easy feat! Despite God’s promise to do all the hard work, Moses spent almost a whole chapter of scripture trying to back out of it. To be fair, I think I would struggle with such a great ask.

We humans do have a tendency to disqualify ourselves when big opportunities come up. The question becomes: do I give more weight to my self-doubt, or to God’s faithfulness? So how do you respond when God opportunities come your way? I would encourage you to read this interaction in full. Being bold is a very different exercise when we remember who God is and what He’s capable of.
