Farmers in Australia are afraid that locusts may destroy their crops. We can appreciate their fears. We read in the Bible about a plague of locusts that destroyed the crops in Joel's country of Judah. Like a powerful army, the locusts invaded and stripped away all the vegetation. But as bad as that was, Joel realized that this plague was an omen of a greater calamity. In chapter 3, he said the day of the LORD would come and punish many nations because of their wickedness. God said He would judge the nations in the Valley of Decision. He would strip away the wicked just as locusts ate up vegetation. Could it be that the unusual weather is God's warning to us that evil is out of control? Of course, most people quickly dismiss weather disasters as quirks of nature—totally unrelated to human actions. To them, anybody who suggests otherwise is out of touch with science and the natural order of things. But since we accept the Bible as God's revelation, we do not dismiss such events as purely coincidental. The Bible records how God sometimes permits tragedies to remind people of their wayward ways. Joel tells us that when the sins of the world reach their full measure and people refuse to repent, God takes action. The Bible tells us that God's weapons include famine, disease, and warfare. So could our unusual weather be God's warnings? I am not saying, I am just asking.
