The Way of Love in a World of Hurt: A 5-Day Reading Plan

DAY 2 OF 5

Day 2: Greatness in the Small Things

When we look around, it’s easy to see all the great things others are doing. Especially in a time of social media, we can peek into the lives of others without leaving our homes. We hear about the mission trips they’ve taken. We witness the many ways they’re serving their communities. Even simple activities at home are recorded and broadcast online. It often leaves us feeling like our ordinary life is not so important.

However, Scripture tells us that even the little details mean something. The day-to-day moments add up to cherished memories. Even those seemingly insignificant acts become important. The compassionate hug strengthens someone who is hurting. A handwritten note encourages someone who is struggling. One of Jesus’ most well-known miracles, the feeding of the five thousand, involved a meager contribution of bread and fish that resulted in something amazing. When Jesus asked His disciples to feed the multitude that had come to hear Him speak, they were baffled and could only provide a boy’s lunch of five small loaves and two small fish (John 6:9). They asked Jesus, “How far will they go among so many?” But Jesus was not deterred by this small offering. He was able to use it for greatness.

In the same way, when we offer our small acts to Jesus, He can turn them into greatness for His glory. What we think are ordinary moments can become significant memories in the lives of others.

Consider: Do you consider that your life consists of simple moments that can encourage others and point them to Jesus? Allow yourself to view your day differently as you notice the small ways you can serve others.

Reflect

Reflect on a small act of kindness or service that had a significant impact on your life. How can you embrace that your ordinary moments and small acts can be used for greatness in God's kingdom?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, help me to see the significance in the small moments of life. May I offer my everyday actions to You, trusting that You can turn them into greatness for Your glory. Open my eyes to the opportunities to serve others in simple ways. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
