The Way of Love in a World of Hurt: A 5-Day Reading Plan

DAY 1 OF 5

Day 1: Connecting with Others

Perhaps you’ve heard the saying, “No man is an island.” God did not create us to live apart from community. From the beginning, He declared that it was not good for man to be alone (Gen. 2:18). Humans thrive in community, and it is in community where we are best able to reflect the love of Jesus and give glory to God.

When we examine the life of Jesus, we see that He emphasized being with others. Yes, there were times when He went away to be alone with the Father, but more often, He was in the middle of crowds, serving and teaching. He was with friends, celebrating at a wedding or having a meal together.

God has placed us in the world at this specific time to share His love with others. He wants us to know others and be known by them. Scripture tells us that “two are better than one…If either of them falls, one can help the other up” (Eccl. 4:9–10). How often have you been down and needed someone to lift you? Perhaps you’ve received difficult news and needed encouragement. Or been ill or physically injured and needed a helping hand.

As we connect with others, we must be honest and vulnerable to share and willing to listen to others as they share with us. This is where the true connection lies.

Consider: Are you part of a community? Do you have people with whom you can be open and honest? If not, ask God to lead you to others who need encouragement and who can offer real connections as you both grow in the Lord.

Reflect

How has being part of a community or connecting with others played a role in your spiritual journey, and how can you actively pursue deeper connections with those around you?

Prayer

Dear Lord, thank you for the gift of community and relationships. Help me to be open, vulnerable, and willing to connect with others. Guide me to those who need encouragement and who can offer genuine connection as we both grow in our relationship with You. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
