Remain Humble
Attributing success to our efforts is a form of idolatry, which begets self-centeredness and complacency that ends up in compromise. Instead of fearing God, some fear the world and seek its deceiving goods. Others seek knowledge and acclaim, stealing glory from God. Yet the practice of attributing success to our own efforts has been the case throughout church history and continues today.
Scripture teaches us that humility and the fear of the Lord are rewarded by riches, honor, and life. When we circumvent or forget to humble ourselves before the Lord or misuse the stewardship of His Peace and Prosperity—meant for the Gospel’s sake, not self-absorption—we will be shaken.
Consider Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian king. When he thought too highly of himself, ascribing glory to his own name, God humbled him. For seven years, he lost his sanity. But when the king finally realized God is the Most High and the One who has all Power, Might, and Wisdom, God restored Nebuchadnezzar.
The Lord’s discipline is unpleasant, painful, and wholly for our good. Like a consuming fire, His chastisement can do one of two things. It will either harden our hearts or cause us to refocus our priorities and re-evaluate our purpose for living. God chastises us to bring us back in line with His Truth, in His Grace, so that we can be partakers of His Holiness.
If embraced, His discipline will produce righteousness in us and increase our measure of peace. It will also cause rejoicing and praise to rise from within us. The psalmist declares in Psalm 118 that though he was chastened severely, he will live and declare all God has done. He recounts the many times God has been his strength, defense, and salvation.
Don’t be discouraged. Don’t be weary. Be quick to repent of any outward action, inward thought, or motivation for which the Holy Spirit brings conviction. Then, like the king, recognize God’s Sovereignty and, like the psalmist, recount His Goodness in your life. You, too, will see His Salvation and give thanks to Him, knowing you are greatly loved!
Heavenly Father, I come to You with a humble heart. I do not want to be stubborn anymore. Please align my heart to Yours. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
