Faith & Love: A One Year Bible Reading Plan - Part 11Sample
Today's chapter is 2 Peter 2, and I'd like us to take a closer look at verses 17-19 from the CSB translation.
“'These people are springs without water, mists driven by a storm. The gloom of darkness has been reserved for them. For by uttering boastful, empty words, they seduce, with fleshly desires and debauchery, people who have barely escaped from those who live in error. They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption since people are enslaved to whatever defeats them.”
In this letter, Peter is speaking to the Churches in Asia Minor, warning them that many false teachers have risen up, claiming that God has no concerns with moral living but that now those who are free in Christ can live as they please with no consequence. Peter responds by saying that, in reality, those who choose to live this way are slaves to their bodily impulses, and he likens them to “dogs returning to their vomit.” (Proverbs 26:11)
God cares not only about our destination but also about our character and who we are becoming. We have been saved for lives of freedom from sin, not only from the consequences of sin. And we have been saved not only for our sake but also so that we can bring others into the freedom we have found. Let us be wary of those teaching any Gospel other than the Gospel of Jesus Christ, but let’s also be aware of the places and spaces where we have started to believe that the perpetuating sin in our lives does not matter to God. Would you spend time with Him today, allowing Him to examine your heart? And if He reveals something to you in this area, would you surrender it to Him?
