The 5 Bible Verses Missed or Misunderstood by 99% of ChristiansSample
The Test Of The 4 "Verses"
In our little quiz, we looked at 4 truths that are often said to come from the Bible:
1) "Money is the root of all evil."
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. – 1 Timothy 6:10a
The text says that the LOVE OF MONEY is the root of all kinds of evil. Money itself is not bad, but the love of money can be.
2) "We should all have a childlike faith."
Regarding childlike faith, this Christian myth comes from the following verses:
He said to them, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." – Mark 10:14-15
And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." – Matthew 18:3
Jesus tells the disciples and others that it is about how we RECEIVE the kingdom of God, and how we must CHANGE to become like little children to enter the kingdom of God. The Bible never says to have a childlike faith, but for us to become like children, and to receive the kingdom as they would – wholeheartedly, with joy and excitement.
3) "God helps those who help themselves."
There are a couple of verses in the Bible which seem to support this teaching:
"For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: 'The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.'" – 2 Thessalonians 3:10
"Lazy hands make for poverty, but diligent hands bring wealth." – Proverbs 3:10
The idea that GOD HELPS US when we first help ourselves is completely contrary to the teachings of the Bible. Throughout the New Testament, we are reminded that God is our source of strength, and that we can accomplish nothing without Him. Yes, God wants us to help ourselves, but doing that is not a prerequisite to God helping us, nor does it guarantee that God will help us.
4) "God will not forgive those who do not forgive others."
This last option comes from the words of Jesus Himself, just after teaching His disciples how to pray the Lord's Prayer:
"For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins." – Matthew 6:14-15
You may not hear much about this idea that our forgiveness is dependent on us forgiving others, but it is.
So, how did you do on this question? Many good-sounding things seem to come from the Bible, but on a closer look, we see that this is not always the case.
Next time you hear a slogan or someone quote a "verse," be sure to double-check the source!
