Hero of the HomeSample
Open-Minded
By now you are well on your way to becoming the hero of your home. You have learned that a hero must be honest and lay a firm foundation of trust. You also learned that if you are going to have a strong connection with your family, you will need to be empathic with them. Yesterday I talked about the importance of respect and how when you are intentional about giving respect, you will receive it in return.
Today let’s wrap up this reading plan by introducing the final quality of a hero. To fully embrace your hero status, you will need to be open-minded.
When one is open-minded, it means they are willing to consider new ideas and hear other people’s opinions and ideas.
Being open-minded is essential in marriage, but I understand it can be difficult to walk out. However, if you are unwilling to allow your wife and children a say in situations, this shows a deeper problem that will have to be dealt with in your quest to become a hero.
Selfishness
You can’t be selfish with a “my way or the highway” mentality and expect to be viewed as the hero of your home.
If you do have a “selfish” mindset, your life and your family’s life are not going to be very enjoyable. Although you might win the “battle” of getting your way, you will lose the “war” and the ability to work together as a team.
So how can you become more open-minded?
It all starts with 1 John 1:9; we must confess our sins and allow the Lord to cleanse us of our unrighteousness.
Then we practically walk out 1 John 3:18, and we do that by changing our actions and behaviors. We will have to start listening to the thoughts and opinions of our wife and children, working together as a team, and finding ways to compromise so everyone has an enjoyable experience.
Although compromise is not fun, it can be very beneficial to your relationships. I believe Donna Martini put it best with this quote.
“Compromise is not about losing. It is about deciding that the other person has just as much right to be happy with the end result as you do.”
-Que Dramatic Hero Music Here-
You may not have a superpower, but you have the power to change your marriage and your family by practicing Honesty, Empathy, Respect, and Open-mindedness. Like any good hero, you will have to make changes and even sacrifice your own desires from time to time, but the end goal will be so worth it.
Prayer
Father,
Help me today to be open-minded. Allow me to be a person who listens to the thoughts and opinions of my wife (and children). Lord let me be the example of being open-minded that my family can follow.
In Jesus name,
Amen
Action
Allow your wife and children to voice their opinions and ideas; be open and willing to compromise so everyone can be happy with the outcome.
