Hero of the HomeSample
Honesty
Deep down, I believe every man wants to be a hero. We want to be admired and have people look up to us. Honestly, this isn’t a bad goal to have. But let's be real; the odds of us running around in a cape and tights to save a person who needs us are slim to none. That's not at all what a true hero looks like.
A true hero is something very different.
Becoming a true hero starts at home. It starts with making daily choices that benefit your spouse and your family. Mark Batterson put it best when he said, “I want to be famous in my own home.” A true hero seeks to be famous in his home first with the people he loves the most.
It’s not going to be your accomplishments with other people that make you famous in your home. It’s going to be your consistent actions and behaviors. You can only become heroic to your wife and family by putting them first, treating them well, and modeling the character of a true hero.
So, are you ready to be famous with your family and become a true hero? You can start this process in two ways.
The first step to becoming a hero in your home is by being honest with your wife and keeping your word when it comes to your children. Honesty is the foundation upon which your entire marriage and family should be built. Colossians 3:9 makes it plain that lies should not be a part of our vocabulary any more. This is especially true when it comes to our wife and children.
The second step is to surround yourself with honest and trustworthy men—men who not only speak the truth to their own families but also will hold you accountable to do the same. You are not meant to be a heroic husband all on your own. Call in reinforcements to help you succeed. When you befriend these kinds of men you will see Proverbs 27:17 worked out in your own life. Iron sharpening iron!
Being truthful with your spouse may not always be easy, and keeping your word with your children can be difficult sometimes. However, when your actions are selfless and your words are honest and you surround yourself with other heroic husbands, it will not only establish peace and trust with your children, but your marriage will also be established on a firm foundation.
