Overcome

Lord God,

Jacob was a rascal who deceived his father and cheated his brother of his birthright, yet he still captured your heart. He struggled with you, devoted himself to you, and received the promise of your love.

In his humanness, he was not much different than any of us, but maybe he did one thing I struggle to do. He looked to you for guidance and wisdom. He took the vision of that ladder going up to heaven and realized you offered a kind of power and wisdom he could never have on his own. He saw you as faithful as you changed his name, inspired his heart, and helped him become a better person.

Help all of us trust you in all we do, believing in the blessing we might have if we keep trying, even when struggling to do your will. Strengthen us to win the battles we face so that we can bring honor and glory to your name. Amen.
