Precious Moments That Count For EternitySample
Low Depth of Field
There is a concept in photography or optics called ‘depth of field’. It is simply the range that is in focus in a picture. With a greater depth of field, more of the picture is in focus and with a lesser depth of field, only a certain portion is in focus. Keeping a low depth of field, helps draw attention to the subject, keeping the rest of the picture out of focus.
When Peter saw Jesus walking on water, he wanted to do likewise. Seeing his faith, Jesus told him to step out of the boat. Very often, we step out in faith under God’s guidance. And we walk on water! But the minute our focus shifts from Jesus to the wind around us, our faith wavers and we start sinking. Of course, when you call out for help, God saves you, gets you back in the boat and calms the wind (Matthew 14:32). As long as you are only looking at Jesus, your faith remains. But when the wind around comes into view, doubts hit and that is what causes faith to diminish.
If He has called you out, it means that He will give you the ability to walk on water. Defying science is His problem. We have to keep looking at Him; not even at the miracle, but just at Him and He takes care of the rest. It is natural to be afraid of the wind. That is its job – to instill fear. But if we keep focusing on Jesus and not on the surroundings, we can keep walking on water.
Prayer
Lord, help me to not let my focus shift from You. Amen.
