PRICELESS: Respect & HonorSample
PRICELESS
The Bible describes several occasions when Jesus went against the grain of His culture and affirmed the priceless value of those who were considered worthless by society. Today we will look at just one of those passages.
Read John 8:2-11
Jesus saw the woman as a person, while her accusers saw her as a tool to use for their own purpose. The Scribes and Pharisees were trying hard to get Jesus to discredit Himself as the Messiah. They found the perfect tool: a sinful woman who could be manipulated into getting caught having sex with a man she wasn’t married to. (You have to wonder what happened to the man who was having sex with her – his punishment should have been the same!)
Jesus didn’t directly judge the accusers or the woman, but instead He offered a chance for a restart. In this encounter, Jesus walks a fine line between not being a “Judge” and yet not condoning sin. A striking part of this story is that Jesus treated the woman as equal to her accusers. He spoke to both about sin— and if you think about it, He invited both to give up old ways to begin life anew.
1. How can you tell if someone is using you for their own benefit?
2. When are you capable of looking past someone’s appearance or status and interacting with them as a “real” person?
3. When are you least able to do that?
4. What can you do to acknowledge the priceless worth of each person you encounter?
