40 Faces, 40 Places: A Devotional Journey

DAY 34 OF 40

Anu from London

Sometimes whole-life discipleship looks like trusting God chose the right person when He chose you.

I work from home, leading a team for a marketing tech company. My job is about making sure clients are happy, helping them use the platform, and making sure my team is doing what’s been asked. I’m a people person, so I love my job! It means I have the opportunity to impact a wide variety of people, from leaders to juniors to clients.

Even though I’ve been in leadership for years, I sometimes have serious imposter syndrome. In every new role I get, I pray, ‘God, you’ve got to do this because I can’t do it by my own might!’ I trust He’s put me in this position, and I pray a lot, even in the few seconds before I answer the phone or send an email.

As a working Christian, God’s word has got to be my bread and butter, the first thing I think about when looking for advice. I don’t think we should learn Bible verses to tell others what to do; instead, to remember God’s promises to us. In the face of apprehension, difficult clients, and misunderstandings, I try to go to the Bible to see how God deals with difficult people and take wisdom from that.

When I’m dealing with a difficult client, I try to look at things from their perspective so I can give them what they need. My faith gives me a lot of patience and confidence that I’m the person God put in this role to help this client. Sometimes we say ‘Why me?’ in a frustrated way, but I like to think about it positively. Why has God put me here?

Reflection

Many of us have times we can relate to Anu. Even though she can recognize God’s hand in her story, she still has times of feeling like a fraud.

There’s a long history of imposter syndrome in the Bible. Gideon isn’t the only one whose first reaction is, ‘Here I am, Lord, but shouldn’t you send someone else?’ In those times, God’s reassurance isn’t based on our competence but His plan and purposes and His promise to accompany us.

Anu tries to fill her working day with quick prayers and recognizes the difference this makes. What prompts might help me to do the same? An image on my desktop? A silent reminder on my phone? A visual reminder in my car?

Prayer

Lord, I look back with gratitude at Your guiding hand in my life. Thank You for the confidence this brings that You can work through me on my frontline today. Whenever I feel inadequate for the tasks You’ve given me, help me bring my concerns to You. Help me remember to pray, not just now but throughout my day.
