Being Challenge Kids: An 11-Day Challenge to Be Like JesusSample
Habit 2: We Study Scripture
Sure, sheep are cute and fluffy, but they also have a reputation for being not too bright! Sheep are pretty dumb animals. But they’re smart enough to recognize the voice of their shepherd. Jesus told a story to help us understand this:
“The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will run away from him because they do not recognize a stranger’s voice.” John 10:2-5
Jesus is our Good Shepherd. When we read the Bible, we are like sheep learning to recognize His voice. The more we read and hear God’s Word, the easier it is for us to recognize when something doesn’t sound right. The Bible contains truth. The Bible is truth—timeless truth.
If we memorize the sound of our shepherd’s voice, we’ll be able to run away from teachings and other things that don’t sound right. We can compare, or test, what we hear with what we learned and memorized in God’s Word.
The Bible includes stories that touch our hearts, and it has deep lessons that light up our minds. The more we read, remember, research, and reflect on God’s Word, the more it will change us from the inside out.
- When I READ about the grace God has given me, I can’t help but give grace to others who have hurt me.
- When I REMEMBER how Jesus is coming back for me someday, it gives me joy when things are hard.
- When I RESEARCH how generous God has been toward me, I try to be more helpful to those around me.
- Finally, when I REFLECT on God’s mission to save the lost, I want to be a part of that mission.
