Starting Your Day With GodSample
Why a routine?
Routines shape us. If we follow a routine of consistent walking or running, our legs and other muscles strengthen so we can walk or run farther every day. If we follow a working routine that allows us to work during a set time then put it aside for the rest of the day, our brains and bodies adjust and learn to follow that routine without thinking too much about it. Habits effectively make us do the things
A routine is also a great way to break bad habits. Maybe you have a tendency to scroll through your phone until your eyes are exhausted again and you fall back asleep. Maybe you stare at a wall for thirty minutes before you finally get ready for the day. I want to propose you take that time to focus on something that holds more answers than your social media feed and your bedroom wall.
Every morning, you have the choice to stare at something offering you nothing (or worse: something negative) or to spend your time meditating on God’s Word, talking with Him about the day to come. In doing so, you build your relationship with God and prepare your heart to worship Him in all you do. God wants this from us. Our souls want it, too.
This time with God will not happen without routine. I don’t know about you, but when I wake up, everything in me tells me to use every spare minute to sleep some more. Since the logical part of our brains don’t seem to wake up very quickly, a routine is the most effective way to combat impulses like going back to bed or scrolling through social media.
Instead, imagine how your day would change if you began it by saturating yourself with God’s Word. Can you see it? Going back to bed sets the tone that you are exhausted. Scrolling through social media sets the tone that your life is boring and meaningless. Time in God’s presence listening to Him sets the tone that everything you do and think is because of Him and for Him. You begin to view the world through God’s eyes and you learn His plans for you.
I don’t know about you, but I truly want to start my day this way.

About this Plan
Every morning, we prepare for the day––physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. When it comes to spiritual preparations, how do we get our hearts on track as we wake up and start the day?
