25 Songs of Christmas a Musical Celebration of the SeasonSample
Day 18 — Because He Lives
“Because I live, you will live also” (John 14:19, NKJV).
This verse is the basis for one of the most powerful ballads in Christian music, “Because He Lives.” Written by William and Gloria Gaither in 1971, this song was awarded Gospel Song of the Year in 1974 by the Gospel Music Association.
The song successfully ties the birth of Jesus to His resurrection and our hope for the future. This was significant at the time the song was written, which was a time of social upheaval, threats of war, and a breakdown of trust between citizens and the government. Sound familiar? The lyrics still ring true today:
Because He lives,
I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives,
All fear is gone.
And now I know
He holds the future
And life is worth the living,
Just because He lives.
That is the hope that was born on the first Christmas. With His birth, death and resurrection, we are assured a good future, no matter what is happening in our personal lives or in the world around us.
This Christmas, take the time to worship God by singing this powerful song to Him. Remind yourself and thank Him that because He lives, you are free from fear and filled with hope that your future in Him is bright and secure. That’s a gift like no other!
