PLANK OR SPECK?

Warren Buffet, the 4th richest man in the world, said, “In looking for people to hire, look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.” In other words, integrity is of higher importance to an employer than intelligence, energy, and many other qualities. Integrity means to keep your word even if it becomes difficult. Integrity means doing what you said you would do and being where you said you would be, whether the boss is in or out of the building. “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching” – C.S. Lewis. 

Integrity is essential when representing a company, and integrity is essential when representing Jesus. “Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the Gospel of Christ.” If you call yourself a Christian, then you should act like one. That’s how a person of integrity lives. Look around; it’s easy to pick the Christians who aren’t conducting themselves in a way that honors God. However, maybe we ought to take a second look. Not at other Christians (that’s the easy part), but take a second look at yourself - that’s much harder. Jesus teaches us to take the plank out of our own eye so that we may see clearly to remove the speck from our friends (Luke 6:42). What he means by this is we should look at our shortcomings and be aware of our sin before we go judging others.

Of course, we all continually fall short, and that’s ok. Jesus’ grace is continually working in us every day, and because of this, we can receive forgiveness and move forward. Let us also show grace to others, even those who follow Jesus too. We’re in this together!

The next time you find yourself judging another, stop and look for a plank in your own eye. Give that to God and pray for your friend whom you were judging. 

Prayer:

God, I pray you would forgive me for those I have judged in my life. Forgive me for judging their actions and motives. I ask you to help me look at my own life and the things I need to bring before you. I don’t want to be a critical and judgmental person. Instead, I want to be filled with your grace and love for others.
