Hearts of Light

Sounds of cicadas filled the air on those muggy August evenings as the sun began to set and temperatures cooled slightly. Armed with mayonnaise jars with holes poked through the lids, our twilight mission began: capture as many fireflies as possible. Providing specimens for a research study, our high school band earned half a cent for each lightning bug collected. Beyond the challenge of increasing our nightly tally, was the pleasure of enjoying the warm glow of these little bugs. Our jars became beacons of light as darkness covered our neighborhood, guiding our bare feet and creating a peaceful calm. Holding our jars together, the effect was mesmerizing. The light was brilliant against the blackness of night. God is light. He is being experienced powerfully against the dark backdrop of struggle in our schools today.

As we begin these five powerful prayers to impact the hearts of our school communities, we are confident that God will hear and answer our prayers for His light to produce significant transformation and hope.

Let’s pray today, praising our God of light and praying for hearts of light.

Praise God Who is Light

“God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all.” I John 1:5

God, we acknowledge that You are light, both physically and spiritually. Darkness flees from You. We bring You praise for Your perfection and light. In You, no student or staff member needs to be afraid.

Pray for Hearts of Light

 “…let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:16

 Lord, we pray for Your light to shine in the hearts of the children of our city. Protect them from darkness and evil and produce in them good deeds which will point others to You.

Pray for Those Who Carry God’s Light  

“I have placed you as a light for the Gentiles, that you may bring salvation to the end of the earth.” Acts 13:47

We pray that you would encourage and spur on those who bring God’s light into school communities through Child Evangelism Fellowship, Young Life, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and other gospel centered ministries. Draw students and staff to You through the faithful teaching of Your word. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
