DAY VII // WHAT HAS FIRST PLACE?

God has given us many wonderful things to enjoy: nature, sport, music, friends, cooking, pets . . . the list is almost endless. We all have things in our lives that we love, and we can thank God that he has given us those things to enjoy! But although these are really good things, they have the potential to be harmful if they become more important to us than following God.

In today’s passage we meet a rich ruler who comes to Jesus with a question about what he needs to do to receive eternal life—a question many people are still asking today! This rich ruler appears to be a very moral man, outwardly obeying the commandments. Yet Jesus knew his heart and identified the one thing that was holding him back from truly following God.

As we read his story, think about your own relationship with God and the place that you are giving him in your life.
