DAY 4 OF 7

The Legacy of Work

God rested on the seventh day, which means He ‘worked’ on the other days. He made Adam and Eve fully responsible for the Garden of Eden.

I had doubts about my choice of vocation, earlier. But from the day I realised it as my divine calling, it has breathed fresh purpose and renewed perspective into me. Work, though was cursed by sin, has been redeemed by the cross and is now a calling through which we seek to glorify the One Who has called us. Motivated by the love of Christ, my vocation has become an act of worshiping my Master.

The work ethic is to value and work the hard way, smartly. It inculcates perseverance, persistence, consistence, reliability, integrity, diligence and determination – these are the traits of successful people who laughed at their failures.

Lone rangers are almost never sought for, either in relationships or in organisations. It is fairly easy for me to build a case all by myself, but I sincerely strive to be a team player and involve my colleagues in the task.

Sometimes, work tends to assume a mundane, monotonous, dreary, lacklustre note – these are the times we need to take God at His Word, seeking His intervention to enable us for efficient comebacks. The more we work at something with a renewed perspective, the more we are buoyed up with a fresh spirit and enthusiasm.

Google’s ‘20 percent time’ has been a famous, and arguably successful management practices of all times – it allowed employees to take time out of their core assignments to be creative and experiment. This had led to some of the company’s most successful products – AdSense (which now garners 25 per cent of revenue), Gmail, Google Transit, and Google Talk.

Innovation is to be a part of our work routine. This principle empowered the employees to innovate with dignity, and the choice to focus energy on strategies that propelled the company forward.

Every work that comes our way needs our best effort. When we go above and beyond the call of duty and do more than what is asked of us, we will be a valued employee and find great purpose in serving our earthly master, and being subservient to Him too.

Dear Lord, through every challenge, help me to keep You at the centre of everything I do. Amen
