DAY 67 OF 365

The Covenant Confirmed

Deuteronomy 8:17-18
“You may say to yourself, ‘My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me.’ But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.”

The Israelites were warned not to respond with pride to the wealth they inherited and the wealth they produced once they entered the Promised Land. We have the same tendency in the New Covenant. Christians in the west can easily walk in pride and superiority relative to other nations and peoples because of the wealth into which we’ve been born. The warning of Moses is to remember that it is God who gives the ability to produce wealth. However, we have been given other signs of the New Covenant in Christ. While the gospel elevates those who embrace it, we need to be careful to not attribute wealth as a primary sign of God’s saving work in our lives and our citizenship in his kingdom. The wealth of the fruit of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit in transforming our lives and those around us more accurately reflect the confirmation of the New Covenant in our lives. All this is from God, which leaves no room for boasting or pride as we respond to his amazing grace.

Lord Jesus, you are my inheritance. Thank you for grace and for the presence of your Spirit in my life confirming your covenant with me.
