God’s Authority
1 Samuel 24:5-6, 11, 16, 21
“Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. He said to his men, ‘The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the Lord…I am not guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion…’ When David finished saying this, Saul asked, ‘Is that your voice, David my son?’ And he wept aloud…‘Now swear to me by the Lord you will not cut off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father’s family.’”
David recognized God’s anointing of Saul, and he honored the Lord by not avenging himself against Saul. David recognized Saul’s authority came from the Lord because David himself had been anointed by the Lord. Once we experience the Holy Spirit’s power and submit to God’s authority in our life, we become much more aware and sensitive to God’s anointing and authority in others. Rebellion is birthed in the hearts of those who recognize positional authority but are blind to God’s purposes. Saul wanted his family name, honor and legacy to be preserved because God had withdrawn his hand from his [Saul’s] life. Man’s honor was all he had left. We need leaders who know God!
I humble myself before you this day, O Lord.
