[Difference Makers] Harvest Sample
Be a Yes Person
Are you a yes person, or are you a maybe or kind of person? A few days ago, I went to the funeral for a deputy who was killed near here. He was a white officer who was killed by a black man. I sat in the service with other pastors from our community. We sat as a pastoral block, representing all different races, to say we love Jesus. We do not care if you are black, white, brown, green, purple—it does not matter. We sat together in unity.
It was a powerful funeral. The crowd was mostly made up of uniformed police officers, guys and gals with guns, sitting at the funeral of a comrade. There were other first responders and people in suits.
The preacher said, “If you are going to stand against evil, and we are going to trust you to continue to protect, then we want you to stand right where you are, so we can pray for you.” Those men and women stood up right away. There was no hesitation. They could not get up out of their seats fast enough. And those of us who were not police officers, who are not in the line of fire, were inspired. We had goosebumps on our arms. It was powerful. When those officers stood up, I wanted to stand with them. I was sitting there, thinking, “This is what yes people look like. Yes, this is what yes people look like.
Jesus calls us the same way that preacher called on the officers at the funeral. He calls us to make a difference. He calls us to meet others’ physical and spiritual needs. Does He call us to be obnoxious? No. Does He call us to be winsome? Yes. Does He call us to be harsh? No. Does He call us to be compassionate? Yes.
As Christians, we help people, and we help them go to heaven. We walk as difference makers in a world that is in great need.
Pray: Jesus, help me to be a difference maker in Your Name.
