Daily Bible Reading — Sustained by God’s Word of PromiseSample
July 19
Introduction
An Amalekite approaches David and tells him about the death of Saul and his sons. The chapter concludes with David’s song of lament for Saul and Jonathan. It is known as “Song of the Bow” and is one of the earliest known pieces of Hebrew literature. The song reflects David’s own sadness as well as Israel’s when he sings in memory of Saul and Jonathan.
Today’s Scripture: 2 Samuel 1:23 (GNT)
“Saul and Jonathan, so wonderful and dear, together in life, together in death; swifter than eagles, stronger than lions.”
Today’s Reading
2 Samuel 1:1-27
Reflect
What is David told about the death of Saul? How does this account differ from what is recorded in yesterday’s reading (1 Samuel 31:4-6)? Did the Amalekite think he was going to be rewarded by David? What did David do and why? Reread David’s song of lament (verses 19-27). Are there any verses that resonate with you? Within your community of faith, are there hymns that offer comfort and hope in times of grief?
Pray
Gracious and loving God, we mourn for those who lose their lives in battle and seek our comfort and hope in Your promised resurrection. Surround all who grieve this day with Your mercy, love, and peace. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Wounded veterans.
Tomorrow’s Reading
2 Samuel 2:1—3:1: David is made king of Judah.
