Daily Bible Reading — Sustained by God’s Word of PromiseSample
July 21
Introduction
Chapters 3 and 4 recount the deaths of Abner and Ishbosheth. In today’s reading, the leaders of the northern tribes (Israel) accept David as king. David leads a united Israel in capturing Jerusalem from the Jebusites and fighting the Philistines.
Today’s Scripture: 2 Samuel 5:3 (GNT)
So all the leaders of Israel came to King David at Hebron. He made a sacred alliance with them, they anointed him, and he became king of Israel.
Today’s Reading
2 Samuel 5:1-25
Reflect
What did the northern tribes say to David (verses 1, 2)? How did David respond? After capturing the Jebusites’ fortress, what did David do? What did David name the city? In what ways did the King of Tyre offer assistance to David? Have you ever participated in an event that involved members from various faith communities?
Pray
Lord God Almighty, in You we find our strength. Like a fortress of protection, You surround us in Your love. Draw me close to You so that I may abide in the safety of Your care. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Those engaged in negotiating treaties.
Tomorrow’s Reading
2 Samuel 6:1-23: David brings the Covenant Box to Jerusa
