Our idea of “community” should change drastically when we are unified with Christ. You see, when we have truly experienced living in community with Jesus – when we have been comforted by his love, spent time in fellowship with him, have been the recipients of his tenderness, compassion and grace, then we should be a humbled, transformed people. No longer is life about what we can get FROM others, it is about what we can give TO others as an overflow of God’s great love for us. Philippians says that our attitude should be the same as Jesus’ when it comes to our relationships with other people: we should be servants. We would do well to take an assessment of our attitudes towards living in community with people today. Are we looking to be served, or to serve? Do we keep a record of wrongs, or do we love and forgive generously? Do we judge and compartmentalize, or do we extend tenderness and compassion to all? Oh Father, help us to be in such close fellowship with you that our lives overflow with your love and compassion to others around us. We want to serve like you, Jesus, so that others can see your love through us!
