Just as there is benefit from rubbing two iron blades together – resulting in sharpening and making them more productive and efficient in their task of cutting, we too are “sharpened” through our relationships with others. The Quest Bible Commentary describes this verse this way: “This expression has to do with personality. People sharpen each other through exchanging information, discussing issues and critiquing each other’s ideas. Different people can bring different perspectives and strengths to a discussion.” While the sharpening process may be stretching and even uncomfortable at times, true friends sharpen each other in a way that is loving, productive and restorative… yet another benefit of living intentionally in community with people the way God intended.
