Gospel Hope: Devotions From Time of GraceSample
Clay Pots
Everybody’s got ’em. The commonest and cheapest flowerpots are all the same color orange. People aren’t that interested in the pot – they want to spend their money on the flowers after all. The pots are brittle – one drop and they shatter into a bazillion pieces. It’s the glory of the flowers that matters.
Christians are messengers for Jesus. We carry around good news of forgiveness and immortality – the glory of God that shines on us through Jesus Christ. But we are as fragile as flowerpots. “God . . . made His light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God” (2 Corinthians 4:6,7).
The truth of your message to another sinner isn’t spoiled by your personal weaknesses. God’s truth is true no matter who speaks it. Your own moral failings don’t diminish the power of the gospel message – that Jesus Christ lived for you and died for you to transform you from God’s enemy into God’s child.
Our sins do not disqualify us from sharing a message of full and free forgiveness. Our mortality does not disqualify us from sharing a message of immortality. You’re a jar of clay – relax! What matters is the treasure within.
