Proverbs 19
19
1Better is the poor who walks in his integrity
than he who is perverse in his lips, and is a fool. # Pr 28:6
2It is not good for the soul to be without knowledge,
and he misses the way who is hasty with his feet. # Pr 21:5; 29:20
3The folly of man subverts his way,
and his heart rages against the Lord.
4Wealth makes many friends,
but the poor is separated from his neighbor. # Pr 14:20
5A false witness will not go unpunished, # Ex 23:1; Pr 21:28
and he who speaks lies will not escape.
6Many will entreat the favor of the prince,
and every man is the friend to a man who gives gifts. # Pr 17:8; 18:16
7All the brothers of the poor hate him;
how much more do his friends avoid him! # Ps 38:11
He pursues them with words,
yet they abandon him.
8He who gets wisdom loves his own soul;
he who keeps understanding will find good. # Pr 16:20
9A false witness will not go unpunished,
and he who speaks lies will perish. # Pr 19:5
10Luxury is not fitting for a fool, # Pr 26:1
much less for a servant to rule over princes. # Pr 30:21–22
11The discretion of a man defers his anger, # Pr 14:29; 15:18; 16:32
and it is his glory to overlook an offense.
12The wrath of a king is like the roaring of a lion,
but his favor is like dew on the grass. # Pr 16:14–15; Hos 14:5
13A foolish son is the ruin of his father, # Pr 10:1
and the quarrels of a wife are a constant dripping. # Pr 21:9
14House and wealth are the inheritance from fathers, # 2Co 12:14
but a prudent wife is from the Lord. # Pr 18:22
15Slothfulness casts a man into a deep sleep,
and an idle soul will suffer hunger. # Pr 20:13; 23:21
16He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, # Pr 13:13; Lk 10:28
but he who is reckless in his ways will die.
17He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord,
and He will repay what he has given. # Pr 28:27; Ecc 11:1; 2Co 9:6–8
18Discipline your son while there is hope; # Pr 13:24; 22:15; 29:15
do not be a willing party to his death.
19A man of great temper will pay the penalty;
if you rescue him, you must do it again.
20Listen to counsel and accept instruction,
that you may be wise in your future. # Ps 37:37
21Many are the plans in the heart of a man,
but it is the counsel of the Lord that will stand. # Ps 33:10–11; Pr 16:9
22What is desirable in a man is kindness,
and it is better to be poor than to be a liar.
23The fear of the Lord leads to life, # 1Ti 4:8
and he who has it will rest secure; he will not be visited by evil. # Pr 12:21
24A sluggard # Pr 15:19 hides his hand in the bowl;
he will not bring it to his mouth again.
25Strike a scoffer, and the simple will learn what is prudent; # Dt 13:11
reprove one who has understanding, and he will gain knowledge. # Pr 21:11
26He who plunders his father and evicts his mother
is a shameful and disgraceful son. # Pr 10:5; 17:2
27Cease, my son, to hear instruction,
and you will stray from the words of knowledge.
28A corrupt witness mocks justice,
and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity. # Job 15:16; 34:7
29Penalties are prepared for scoffers,
and beatings for the backs of fools. # Pr 10:13; 26:3
