Proverbs 18

18
1A man who separates himself seeks his own desire;
he defies all sound judgment. # Jude 19
2A fool takes no delight in understanding,
but only in airing his opinions.
3When the wicked comes, then comes contempt,
and with dishonor comes disgrace.
4The words of a man’s mouth are deep waters, # Pr 20:5
the wellspring of wisdom is a flowing stream.
5It is not good to favor the wicked,
to subvert the righteous in judgment. # Lev 19:15; Pr 24:23
6The lips of a fool enter into contention,
and his mouth calls for a beating.
7The mouth of a fool is his undoing; # Pr 10:14
his lips are the snare of his soul. # Pr 12:13
8The words of a slanderer are like tasty morsels; # Pr 16:28
they go down into the innermost parts of the heart.
9He who is slack in his work # Pr 10:4
is brother to him who is a master of destruction. # Pr 28:24
10The name of the Lord is a strong tower; # 2Sa 22:3; Ps 18:2
the righteous run into it and are safe.
11The wealth of a rich man is his strong city, # Pr 10:15
like a high wall in his own imagination.
12Before destruction the heart of man is haughty,
and before honor comes humility. # Pr 11:2; 15:33
13He who answers a matter before he hears it, # Jn 7:51
it is folly and shame to him.
14The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness,
but a wounded spirit, who can bear? # Pr 15:13; 17:22
15The heart of the prudent acquires knowledge, # Pr 15:14
and the ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
16The gift of a man opens the way for him,
and brings him before great men. # Ge 32:20; 1Sa 25:27
17He who is the first to make his case seems righteous,
but his neighbor comes and cross-examines him.
18Casting lots settles disputes; # Pr 16:33
and keeps the mighty apart.
19A brother offended is harder to be won than a strong city,
and disputes are like the bars of a castle.
20A man’s stomach will be filled with the fruit of his mouth;
and with the harvest of his lips will he be satisfied.
21Death and life are in the power of the tongue,
and those who love it will eat its fruit.
22He who finds a wife finds a good thing, # Pr 12:4; 19:14
and obtains favor from the Lord. # Pr 8:35
23The poor use entreaties,
but the rich answer roughly. # Jas 2:3
24A man of many friends may come to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. # Pr 17:17
