It’s No Big Thing

By Rex Stump

READY:

“…But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master.” – Genesis 4:7

SET:

“It's no big thing.” Have you heard that phrase from a friend, a teammate or even yourself? Maybe it was a false start on the track, your first foul in a basketball game, or a flag in a football game. Maybe it was an angry word spoken to your opponent or your disrespectful actions toward an official. “It's no big thing.” Right?

It could be one incomplete homework assignment. Maybe it was simply skipping church. Maybe it was a small drink, a quick glance at a website, a few choice words placed on social media, or an R-rated movie with 20-plus F-bombs. “It's no big thing.” Right?

What if I told you that little things can quickly escalate into big things? Would you then be so nonchalant about those little things?

Adam and Eve's disobedience brought sin into the human race (Genesis 3). Just eating the wrong piece of fruit seemed like “no big thing,” but their sinful nature quickly developed in their children. God warned Cain before his murderous act, but jealousy led to anger, anger led to action, and his action lead to murder.

Our “little” sins can become something big if we aren't careful. Watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control us. And it will lead you places you never thought you wanted to go or dreamed you would.

GO:

1. What was something little that became something big in your life?

2. What little thing do you need to confess and quit?

3. What plan of discipline do you have to combat the little things?

WORKOUT:

Matthew 26:69-75

Galatians 5:9-10

Hebrews 12:14-16

OVERTIME:

“Father, I don’t always realize that sin is at my door. Please give me strength to overcome sin by the power and strength of Your Spirit. Guard me from all my sinful actions—big and little.”
