The Little Things

By Sarah Rennicke

READY:

“The master was full of praise. ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’” – Matthew 25:21

SET:

Another missed free throw. Another slip of the tongue that falls on a teammate. Friction with that coach who can’t see your value beyond your ability. Sometimes we’re just one explosion away from ruining our refinement.

Often when we are in tough spots as athletes, we take a quick breath, readjust our sights and focus on what’s before us. It’s almost like tunnel-vision concentration—follow-through, check our tongue, focus on getting the next play right. While it may seem menial, over time it makes a big difference.

How we react to the little things of life shapes our hearts. God has great plans for us, yet we must first take responsibility for what we do now. He’s training our hearts to serve Him with gladness no matter what. While we may not think much of the mundane, in God’s eyes, nothing is too small. When we shift our heart posture to love in the little things, we change as He brings us greater responsibility.

First we master the basics. We must be found faithful with the small before He entrusts us with much, even when little is the last thing we want to work on. But because our eyes are on the cross and what Jesus did for us, we can give our all in everything.

GO:

1. What are “small things” you can do today for God?

2. What role does pride play in keeping you from serving in small ways?

3. How has God promised to be with you in this season of life?

WORKOUT:

Proverbs 22:4

Luke 16:10-12

Overtime:

“Lord, I get frustrated when I can’t master a play or get along with my teammate, and it’s hard for me to submit to the small tasks that will make me better. Please help me do the little things for Your glory today.”
