“My Sweet Lord (with Emmylou Harris)” Devotional
Crowder
“My sweet Lord, desperately/ I am alone, and afraid to be./ My love is gone, so far away/ I need my sweet Lord’s help today.”
Perhaps the most basic prayer found throughout scripture is the cry for help. It’s certainly among the most common prayers we say today. The cry out for help to God can be for any number of things -- for strength, for perspective, for healing, for hope – and it shows both how needy we are and how God alone is our ultimate provider.
We find many of these cries for help within the Psalms, a collection of heartfelt poems and songs written by David and others that communicate the same sentiment found in “My Sweet Lord”. He’s asking the Lord to meet him at his point of need. It’s the same prayer we all have prayed.
The prayer of David found in Psalm 86 not only serves as an example of a “help me” prayer, but also tells us why we turn to God time and again.
No one is like God. There is no other source to whom we can turn to provide the answers we are looking for. Whether we are attacked or distressed, God is our refuge. Whether we are afraid or hopeless, God is our hope. When we are lost or confused, God is our direction. When we are hurt and in pain, God is our healing.
No matter what our need might be, God is our sustenance. As David reminds us, no deed compares with God’s deeds. May we continue to remember that there is an answer for our questions and salve for our wounds. Our heavenly father provides for His children, and this song reminds us that such hope remains in place even today.
